GFM Spotlight Interview: Stokley Talks Sankofa, Jam and Lewis & Prince
To say we’ve been waiting for Stokley’s sophomore solo album Sankofa for a long, long time now is an understatement. In 2019, he came out swinging with “She”– an instantly addictive first single that made it all the way to number one on the charts and left us wanting more.
During 2020 Stokley released other flavorful singles– a skate jam called “Vibrant” featuring Snoop Dogg, a smooth mid-tempo duet called “Cascade” with The Bonfyre, and earlier this year a breezy ode of appreciation called “Woman” featuring Ghanian rapper KiDi. Other guest artist features include Wale and H.E.R.
Alas, Sankofa is here via Stokley’s partnership with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to release the album under the super-producing duo’s re-launched Perspective Records label. It’s a full-circle moment– Stokley’s band Mint Condition originally released its music under Perspective in the early ’90s.
We talked with Stokley about Sankofa–the featured guest artists, how and if the global pandemic informed the music on the album, renewing his partnership with Jam and Lewis and a special treat– he recalls a great moment with his mentor Prince in France. Watch the video and enjoy.
