Trial and Error the second full-length release from multi-faceted Indie Soul Singer SuCh(who followers of GFM may know from her single “Sugar Maple” that garnered a lot buzz this year) finds this artist making a very personal statement about the journey we experience as life. The set begins with the openly optimistic and aptly titled “Open Book” which is equal parts attention and celebration surrounding the declarative of who this artist is(this particular tune also gives a subtle nod to the sound of a Becker/Fagen arrangement in the setup to the verses).
Trial and Error contains a variety of musical looks as it were, from Pop to several different colors of Soul. But for my ears where this set really shines is on a ballad full of drama that is reminiscent of the work of Oleta Adams and that is the composition “Where You Left Me”. Knowing what I know about the work of SuCh on stage in productions like The Color Purple it makes it easy to see why “Where You Left Me” sounds and feels effortless.

Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.
