Chicago native Trizonna McClendon is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on New Familiar the follow-up to her 2006 release Overtones & Innuendos. As a treat for fans both old and new Trizonna released the teaser single My Special this past summer.
My Special is a mid-tempo groove with a very infectious hook, a bright key that sets the mood and instrumentation that compliments Trizonna’s declarative delivery. On first listen to this track I was reminded of that vocal powerhouse Stephanie Mills, somewhere between the overall timbre and weight of Trizonna’s voice is where I found my comparisons. It was a very pleasant surprise. In this day and age of often whispered, multi-tracked vocals, it is great to hear someone who is not afraid to, and who can sing with authority.
My Special is receiving some well-deserved buzz both here and in the UK. Many of us who have followed the industry trends know what it can mean for an artist to receive recognition abroad. Give My Special a listen and I’m sure you’ll agree.
