GFM Spotlight Interview: Gene Noble Talks Finding His Voice, Quincy Jones' Blessing & Singing Behind The Biggest Acts in the World

Singer-songwriter Gene Noble  has written and/or sung background vocals for some of your favorite artists such as Sting, Chris Brown, Jill Scott, Usher, Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill and others.

His new single, "Matching Tattoos" is the forerunner to his upcoming EP.  If you've been around GFM for a while, you might recognize Noble as the artist formerly known as Jaiden "The Cure". We chopped it up with the New York native about his former stage name... the legend who inspired it... and why he changed his name again. In addition, we talked about his music, his musical heroes, life as writer and background vocalist to the stars and of course he gave us his definition of Grown Folks Music. Watch the interview and enjoy.

#SoulfulSaturday #NowWatching - "Ex-Factor"/"Nice For What"

#SoulfulSaturday - "It's A Real One In Your Reflection!"

-May 5, 2018

We were all surprised with what we at GFM like to call a 'Remake Done Right' from Mr. Aubrey Graham, known to the world as R&B/Hip-Hop artist Drake. His newly released single "Nice For What" has been circulating heavily in the music world, making its presence known on the Billboard charts, globally. Charting at No. 1 this week on the Hot Rap Songs chart, along with mainstream radio airplay. We all caught the genius sampling throughout this bounce influenced jam...sounds familiar doesn't it?

From the 1998 released album, the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, "Ex-Factor".

"Care for me, care for me, you said you'd care for me
There for me, there for me, said you'd be there for me

Cry for me, cry for me, you said you'd die for me
Give to me, give to me, why won't you live for me?"

This week #Growns, we were surprised with a DOPE performance by the impeccable Lauryn Hill herself, vibin' and remixin' Drake's new jam at Harlem's internationally famed Apollo Theater. Ms. Hill dropped some serious bars in her Lauryn way, killin' it. "He took the sample. My sh** a classic. Here’s an example,” she rapped fiercely! Could it be an official remix in the works? If so, we're here for it!

Check out the full performance below Fam!

This week’s well-noted performance comes after Lauryn announced her upcoming Miseducation 20th Anniversary tour, set to kick off July 5th.

Rachel Kerr Alive Single

Now Playing: Rachel Kerr: "Alive"

Growns, you may not know Rachel Kerr... yet, but she has a voice that you need to hear. Rachel Kerr is a British soul singer and songwriter and from the soul she does indeed sing.

Check out "Alive", a song Kerr describes as an "overcomer's anthem-- a song written for every person who has survived what was meant to take them out."

"Alive" is from Rachel Kerr's forthcoming debut album.

Kerr has been called upon to sing by statesmen and music legends. She sang for Former President Bill Clinton and former UK Primer Minister David Cameron ans she has also been the opening act Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, Brandy and Lauryn Hill.

BET has come calling... a few times. In 2013, Kerr was picked up by BET Music Matters as a BET approved feature artist and commenced with a U.S. Tour where she shared the stage with K. Michelle and Sevyn Streeter. Now, catch her as one of the hosts of's series State Of R&B with Sevyn Streeter, LaShawn Daniels, Harmony Samuels and Elijah Blake.

[New Music] Lauryn Hill & Ron Isley - Close to you

This is what I'm talking about right here, bridging the gap done right! If you caught our weekly round up a few weeks ago, the interview where he discussed working with Lauryn was referenced.

Now, we have the manifestation of that union. And below, an excerpt from that Vibe interview:

How’d you end up getting Lauryn Hill?

John McClain [executive producer] was very instrumental in that happening but the duet that we did together people say it’s the best duet they ever heard [and] I’m very proud of that.

But she’s been so inconsistent with music.

It wasn’t hard for me to get her, but it was hard for everybody else. I’m grateful and thankful.

Ah, so your Mr. Biggs side made her an offer she couldn’t refuse?

[Laughs] Yeah, something like that… And I also did something with Aretha Franklin who is my best friend. We talked about recording something together ever since the beginning, when we first met each other, which was 1962 when she was just getting started.

They both sound amazing and I think you can safely add this to your list of must purchase albums this year. We can't wait to hear what else Mr. Biggs has cooked up. Let us know what you think about it.

Lauryn Hill - Repercussions

The internets and music world alike seem to pause at the mere hint of new music from Ms. Hill. Whether it's new or old is really irrelevant to me. While the production sounds very 'miseducationish', (which isn't a bad thing at all), it does lead one to think it's possibly an unreleased track from that 'era'.

I still rock the Miseducation album like it dropped last week! So new or old, this one will get the same love from me. What do you think about it and are you ready for Lauryn to come back for real??

Lauryn Hill - Where art thou?

Come back Lauryn, come back!
