Janelle Monae - Come Alive

Janelle Monae - Come Alive (War of the Roses)

Janelle Monae's (full) album has been anticipated for seemingly as long as Dre's Detox album, Rakim's 7th seal or even Deangelo's often rumored comeback. Early 2010 is the 'new' date, but at least we have some new music to wet your palette.

"Come Alive" is part of the Kia Soul Collective Project and is pure energy, dope. Janelle is so talented and unlike anyone else you've seen. Catch her live and you'll know what we mean. Until then, enjoy this teaser and the free download.
Check it out and let us know what you think.

Meshell Ndegeocello - Devil's Halo

The new album from Meshell Ndegeocello, Devil's Halo is in stores today. True to form, it's a dope album, with a range of musical influences and experimental sounds.

The very Prince-esque "Love You Down" cover (Ready For The World) is a banger and just begs to be listened to repeatedly -- loudly!!

Other standout cuts include the title track and "Mass Transit".

Check out the live performance and listen to the album preview after the jump.

Coldplay - Live album giveaway "LeftRightLeftRightLeft"

Nice! From the "artists who get it file", Coldplay has announced that they will be giving away a free live CD, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, at their remaining shows for 2009.

The promotion starts on May 15th with their show in West Palm Beach, FL. and the album will also be available as a free download exclusively on their website.

According to the band, the give-away is meant as a recession-busting mark of gratitude to everyone who's supported them: "Playing live is what we love. This album is a thank you to our fans – the people who give us a reason to do it and make it happen.

Now, the "free model", "how do you compete with free", "free as a loss leader" etc. doesn't work for everyone.

For superstars such as Coldplay, Trent Reznor, Radiohead & a few select others, it makes sense. But for many, the free model may have lost it's value, particularly when your product isn't even 'free worthy'.

Ironically, I came across a couple of posts, one from marketing guru Seth Godin and another from Kate over at Outlandos Music, (which Seth references) that break down the pro's and cons of the 'free model' very well. Check them out and let us know what you think. In the meantime, enjoy LeftRightLeftRightLeft!

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

The monster single from their second album, Nevermind (DGC/1991). Written by band members, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl & Krist Novoselic the single launched Nirvana into the mainstream and led to a #1 album worldwide.

The album went on to attain the coveted R.I.A.A. Diamond status for sales of over 10 million units. Perhaps not your mama's idea of GFM, but still a great song and video.

What do you think? Do you want to see more like this? Hit us up and let us know.
