Social Media guru Brent Leary and part time Twitter DJ (check him out — #FridayNiteMix) has an interesting blog post correlating social networking with being a DJ. At first glance, it appears to be an odd analogy.
However, some very valid comparisons were presented: instant communication (for better or worse), collaboration and the “viral” nature of social media along with your reputation as a DJ. Be sure to check out his post which also includes an interview with the legendary Daddy-O of Stetsasonic. Oh, and don’t get it twisted, in addition to being to being a legendary rapper, speaker and celebrity DJ — he’s also a well-versed tech-head has some very exciting things in store. Stay tuned…… Truly, ‘Bridging The Gap’.
During his latest mix, he “tweeted” a few lesser known joints from my favorite group of all time, Public Enemy: “How To Kill A Radio Consultant”, Get The F*** Outta Dodge (Apocalypse 91…The Enemy Strikes Black Def Jam/1991) and the one that started it all for me, “You’re Gonna Get Yours”, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, (Def Jam/1987).
This subsequently prompted a brief discussion on a common theme around here, the fact that the Bomb Squad and PE are tragically underrated. If you doubt, please go back and listen. Their catalog is vast and still expanding. Production, lyrics, social & cultural relevance, innovation, mix quality, showmanship, sequencing and more are all on point, ahead of their time in many ways and frequently neglected in conversations about ‘the greats’. The same can be said for Stetsasonic. It’s interesting to note that both of these hip-hop legends are also instrumental in and on the forefront of navigating the ‘new’ technological and social media landscapes. Keep on eye on both of them if you truly want to know, ‘who’s got next’?
Let’s take a moment and give them their well-deserved props!
