We were young at one point and time… but we were still grown. I’m not trying to compare apples and oranges but this is what some of the music that came from the minds, hearts and souls of twenty-somethings when I was a twenty-something sounded and felt like. Fast forward twenty some odd years and you have fifty-somethings imitating twenty-somethings who are imitating sounds and storylines that often strike this ear as prepubescent at best.
But there was a time… there was a place… we can go there again and it doesn’t have to be 1992 it can be 2014 because we’ve seen that is was possible and it can be possible again. We’ve got to raise these babies better and give them some sonic vegetables and perhaps we need to take the microphone from some of these folks who want us to think the only way and the only thing to say is in a child-like manner. No, Grown Folks talk and have something to say and perhaps what the real issue is, is what we have to say resides in truth and truth, well…
Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.
