Before I weigh-in please watch the clip, if you have not already seen it.
First of all congrats to Maxwell, the recognition could not be more well-deserved. As I watched this live on Sunday I could not help but be struck by a few things that Maxwell stated. “At a time where music is not that exciting sometimes…because the feeling is gone.” I couldn’t agree more. I believe that Maxwell also mentioned his band in the making of the record and used the words us or we. He didn’t have a laundry list of “producers” he had his band, his palette and made his music. I hope Maxwell will inspire others to do the same.
Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.
