This selection it is all about the groove, and what a groove it is! The entire rhythm section is locked, drums right on top of the beat anticipating every accent. We also hear flashes of Anita adding fire to the last verse with a looser more ad-libbed delivery which will become a signature of her sound.
On a personal note it’s just something about that early 80’s R&B sound before everything became drum machines with gated sounds and synth everything, sure there are some great all electronic projects that I still listen to from that era, but I don’t think any of them approach the warmth that you feel in a track like “Feel The Need”.
Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.
