It shouldn’t have come as a surprise how smooth Kem’s What Christmas Means is and how easy and enjoyable it is to listen to, but it did. Perhaps that’s because I’ve equated Christmas music with the tunes that blast throughout department stores during the holidays and have more sap than a Maple tree. And although What Christmas Means includes some time-honored songs like “The Christmas Song” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, the album is pure R&B/Smooth Jazz. In a nutshell, Kem is doing Kem– at Christmas. “Be Mine For Christmas”, featuring Ledisi is particularly a stand out. What Christmas Means is an album that could be listened to year round and not sound conspicuously out of place. It’s that smooth.
