Pieces Of A Dream is Fired Up! The veteran jazz and junk band enjoys a blessing a select few artists get to experience– longevity. 2021 marks Pieces Of A Dream‘s 45th anniversary in the music industry and the band’s newest album, Fired Up! is its 25th.
The story of Pieces Of A Dream, who has opened for such luminaries as Miles Davis, Count Basie and James Brown, is a tale of destiny and brotherhood. Picture three starry-eyed teen musicians discovered by Mister Magic (Grover Washington, Jr.). They become teen sensations and go on to join the pantheon of musical wonders from the “City Of Brotherly Love” that includes, Gamble and Huff, Patti Labelle, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, and The Roots. Moreover, the group has toured the world, sold over one million albums, and scored both smooth jazz and R&B radio hits along the way.
During this full and generous conversation with Grown Folks Music, Pieces of A Dream shares the group’s history which includes many legendary and influential people who helped shape its journey. We also talked about Fired Up!– particularly the collaborations on the album. Teenage multi-instrumentalist Justin-Lee Schultz is a featured artist on the album. James Lloyd and Curtis Harmon talked about their relationship as mentors to the young phenom.
And of course, we couldn’t let our conversation with the pioneers of contemporary jazz end without the answer our trademark question, “What is your definition of Grown Folks Music?” Watch and enjoy the interview.
