Voted the 60th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone, this classic first brought to prominence by Al Green was just recently added to The National Recording Registry at The Library of Congress. Al and Tina up first with more covers after the jump. Little did anyone know what was just around the corner for Tina when she released her cover of this classic in 1983.
Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.

This is my first time hearing the Margie Joseph cover; her voice is beautiful. I think that’s the second best version. The first, of course, is from Al Green.
Le Chele I would have to agree with you 100%! I had not heard it either and then when I found out about it and realized that one of my favorite arrangers Arif Mardin was involved I knew it had to be at a certain level and once I hit play I was hooked.
