Written by the great Al Kooper and originally cut by Blood, Sweat and Tears in 1967 this song is probably best known for the Donny Hathaway cover from his 1973 album Extension of a Man.
There’s a great story that goes along with Al Kooper hearing the Donny remake. Upon meeting Donny, Al remarked “What did you do to my song?” he laid out a series of changes to the arrangement and the fact that Donny changed the lyric from “President of General Motors” to “King of everything”. Donny quipped that the likelihood of a black man becoming President of General Motors was almost as likely as him being “King of everything” so he changed the lyric. I don’t think anyone aspires to be President of GM these days.
