www.MAURICEGARLAND.com Interview with 9th Wonder from www.mauricegarland.com on Vimeo.
Sampling Soul is an exciting new course being offered by the Department of African & African American Studies at Duke University. Co-taught by 9th Wonder and Mark Anthony Neal, in my own opinion I can sum up the importance of this course offering by simply stating that it is in a word, important.
You can find a copy of the course overview and syllabus here. Just as the progenitors of this music, Jazz and Blues, have slowly received their just due in academia through rigorous scholarship, I’m pleased to see a similar treatment for Soul. Soul is not only important as a music but it is just as important as a movement.
Here’s to hoping someone will make the lectures available in the form of a podcast.
