Sampling Soul is an exciting new course being offered by the Department of African & African American Studies at Duke University. Co-taught by 9th Wonder and Mark Anthony Neal, in my own opinion I can sum up the importance of this course offering by simply stating that it is in a word, important.

Just as the progenitors of this music, Jazz and Blues, have slowly received their just due in academia through rigorous scholarship, I’m pleased to see a similar treatment for Soul. Soul is not only important as a music but it is just as important as a movement.
Here’s to hoping someone will make the lectures available in the form of a podcast.
Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.
