Oscar Peterson
This page has remained quiet for the better part of a month after a horrendous and truly disappointing reaction to a call for anti-racism that was posted here. I banned over 100 people on two posts that day, and among the disgusting train of comments was one that really did me in, that referred to my late father as "worm food". I did not sign up for that.
When I started this page, I did so not out of obligation, but because I wanted to share photos and memories about the career of Oscar Peterson that I knew his fans would want to see. It grew to be a community of wonderful folks who appreciated the posts. But this was never an obligation. Quite frankly, I don't have to continue to share photos or videos from both our personal and professional archives. I did so because others enjoyed it.
As I have said before, this page celebrates who Oscar Peterson was as an entire human being. Not just his artistry, but that of people he admired, what he endured, subjects that align with his personal beliefs, and an opportunity to introduce those on this page to artists you may not have heard before. That is what this page will always be about. If you don't like it, you're free to leave. If you express your discontent in a way that is considered to be hateful, you will be banned. So as I've said on numerous occasions, I urge everyone to think before you comment.
There may be a post on our Instagram page every now and then - https://instagram.com/oscarpetersonlegacy - because I can avoid mess by turning the comments off, which I cannot yet do on Facebook. It is sad that it stops those with pure intentions from communicating but right now, this is where we're at. This page will remain much less active for the time being. I will not subject myself to the emotional devastation of moderating comments rooted in hate.
I am deeply appreciative of those who enjoy the content on this page and express their appreciation or excitement in a respectful manner. We've all got to do better. Until we do, this page will remain fairly quiet.
Take care of yourselves.
