Our song today was first made famous during the Blanton-Webster years of the Ellington Organization, roughly from 1939-1941. Jimmy Blanton was a double virtuoso who during his short tenure with Ellington revolutionized the use of the Double Bass in Jazz, even bringing the instrument the prominence it deserves as a solo instrument. This recording from 1972 features another Double Bass virtuoso in one Ray Brown, who was certainly influenced by Jimmy Blanton as was/is the case for all Bassists who came after him. Jimmy Blanton tragically died at the age of 23 in 1942 from tuberculosis.
