I don’t want to give the impression that we always have to look back to “Get Grown” we don’t. But it doesn’t hurt, if the material is of this caliber. Music should elicit a response from the listener. Far too often music is in the background these days, not the main event, something on while we are doing something else. There’s nothing wrong with that inherently but when that becomes the primary function of the music, then music ceases to retain her essence. Music is an art form: something to be experienced, something that requires our attention, something that should change us after we’ve encountered her.

Ivan Orr is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and writer. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia Ivan was involved with the forming and nascent days of The Music Resource Center as its first Program Director. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Music, Ivan currently resides in Richmond, VA where he maintains an active performance and production schedule while serving as the Music Editor for Grown Folks Music, a position he has held since 2010.
