Song of the Day – “Data Bank”

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Our song of the day from 1990′s Pandemonium has this fan cherishing what he had actually forgotten about music made with a group dynamic… call and response the element that provides so much energy that doesn’t happen when you surround yourself, with yourself. The requisite “Hey Fellas!” is truly giving me life right now because it gives that feeling of us and as Morris gives direction in the arrangement for guitar and piano you feel a sense of team and personalities pulling together for a common cause which is to make you groove. That’s teamwork, that’s music, that’s The Original 7ven(The Band Formerly Known As The Time).

Song of the Day: The Original 7ven (Formerly – The Time) – “Gigolos Get Lonely Too”

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Known for their brass bed fantasies and ice cream dreams, this song is a sharp left from the indulgent escapades of The Original 7, formally The Time.  The very thought of “settling down” would make a normal gigolo shutter at the mere mention of such a thing. However, with their sexy and sophisticated blend of funk and R&B on this classic Prince track, Gigolos Get Lonely Too from their 1982 release What Time Is It?, The Original 7 can make the toughest player reconsider their bachelorhood. So with that being said, let’s really ask the question, gigolos and gigolettes. Does the need for love overpower the need for the chase in the end? Do gigolos get lonely too?

Song of the Day: The Original 7ven (Formerly – The Time) – “Blondie”

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Blondie, the sexy socialite! Known for funk, pop and R&B hits like Cool and Jungle Love, this particular song from their 1990 album, Pandemonium clearly shows the versatility of  The Original 7ven (Formerly The Time) with that Minneapolis side of rock. The tune kicks in the door with the heavy guitars and later during the vamp with the aggressive rock solo. The other thing about this song is it’s subject matter. Blondie could very well be the theme song for any of the reality TV socialites, basketball wives, mob wives housewives or any other wife show. Hold up, we can probably count sister wives out! That’s a whole other song and situation. LOL!!

Song of the Day: The Original 7ven (Formerly – The Time) – “Cool”

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

C-O-O-L!! What’s that spell? It’s the infectious chorus from “Cool” the second release from the self titled debut album from the band formerly known as The Time, now known as The Original 7ven. Taking me back to college days with every brother on campus attempting to mimic the epitome of cool by sporting silky blazers, high waist-pleated pants and skinny neck ties to compliment their processed, permed, pressed or jheri curled hair. These guys brought new meaning to the word
haberdashery. Before everyone wanted to be like Mike, they wanted to be like Morris Day, Jerome Benton and the gang. Recorded at Prince’s studio and
released in 1981, the album was originally written and performed by Prince with Morris Day replacing Prince’s vocals. “His Royal Badness” is clearly evident
on “Cool” with background vocals and his signature style, heavy on synthesizers and the guitar solo. This party startin’, club banger charted at number seven on
Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles and had everyone already asking “What Time is it?”

“Cover Me” Sundays – “Get It Up”

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

All this month we are celebrating the music of The Original 7ven (The Band formerly known as The Time) and what better way to start of our month than featuring this cover from TLC from the Poetic Justice Soundtrack.

Song of the Day: The Original 7ven (Formerly – The Time) – “Get It Up”

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Get It Up, the debut single from The Time, now known as The Original 7ven, was probably a song a youngster like myself shouldn’t have been singing. As far as I was concerned it had a nice groove with the heavy bass guitar, a pop feel with the funky synthesizers and had some of the coolest and attractively arrogant  dudes playing together. In later learning the meaning of this tune, I definitely knew why I couldn’t sing this at the school talent show. :)   LOL!! Here is the timeless party starter, Get It Up!
