From the press release:

PARIAH opens in theaters December 28, 2011 in NY, LA and SF.

A world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the contemporary drama Pariah is the feature-length expansion of writer/director Dee Rees’ award-winning 2007 short film Pariah. Spike Lee is among the feature’s executive producers.

Adepero Oduye, who had earlier starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister Sharonda (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is a good student at her local high school. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker), Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents’ marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike’s development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague’s daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be  unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

The Infinite, Circular Debate (Well, sometimes it feels that way…)[Editorial]

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Let’s imagine for a moment that the middle of the circle you see represents the socio-cultural construct known as “Blackness”. Also, imagine if you will that the outline of the shape represents the on-going never ending debate about what is and what isn’t “Black” or “Black Enough”. If you give your attention to the middle of the circle yet again you’ll notice that there’s a lot of space contained therein. A lot of space. (more…)

Mo’ Better Blues A 20yr. Retrospective

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

GFM is pleased to present the inaugural contribution from ATL native and current Richmond, Virginia resident Rick Wyatt. Rick is a bassist/educator/musical curator who has a wealth of knowledge in the areas of music, popular culture and historical context. GFM is looking forward to presenting more articles from Rick in the very near future.

Late one night after a gig, I decided to pull a John Coltrane(practice after the gig). After doing so I had the urge to watch “Mo’ Betta Blues”. While watching it I dawned on me that this movie did a great deal for me and my generation. As the opening credits appeared on the screen and I the first few notes of the title song began(yes title song. It’s played slower) I though back to that summer of 1990. (more…)

A very fitting tribute by none other than Spike Lee.

Happy 51st Birthday Michael!

Friday, August 28th, 2009

As the world still mourns the passing of the Greatest Entertainer that ever lived, ironically, still not buried, comes the definitive cause of death: homicide.

His death is still hard to comprehend and with this news, simply tragic. It didn’t have to happen. Not like this. But it did.

Michael, we love and miss you deeply.

Rest in peace.
