Billygoats, Trolls, Gruffs and thangs…

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Well, well, well what do they say about when you wake a sleeping giant? I think there are a lot of giants around (like minded individuals) who have basically gotten to the point with this music thing that they are tired of the bullish and just like in that great movie Network they are not going to take it anymore. Genius in the Key of Quincy

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

20 yrs ago a friend and ventured on a 20-30min ride outside of Atlanta to go see Quincy Jones’ documentary “Listen up”. To say we were awe struck was an understatement. But it is safe to say that we were forever Quincy Jones fans….and students.

Fast forward 20 yrs and Q releases a new disc “Soul Bossanostra”. My friend and I are split on it. He bought it and thinks it’s pretty good. I signed the save Q from himself petition on GFM! Who am I to criticize Quincy Jones?! The man has certainly done his share for music. However I do wish he would’ve leaned more on his musical ear instead of his commercial eye.

But instead of complaining I decided to play a little game. If I had to “share” my suggestions w/Quincy about the direction to take for a project here’s what I would’ve suggested for the Dude!

Project Title: Genius in the Key of Quincy

1. The Roots,Jill Scott, Badu,Mos Def, Talib,Common, Bilal, Jaguar Wright, Q-Tip,Jazzyphatnastees – Listen Up
Interlude of the Roots playing a score piece from one of Q’s films

2. Raphael Saadiq - Light up the Night(Brothers Johnson cover)
Interlude of Saadiq & Joss Stone jamming on “It’s my party”

3. Sy Smith & Lettuce – Razzamatazz (BGV- Lalah,Rahsahaan,Ledisi, Kenya Hathaway, Bilal)
Interlude of Lettuce playing a film score (more…)

Rahsaan Patterson-Easier Said Than Done

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Music from the forthcoming project Bleuphoria.

There is a certain standard that always comes with a Rahsaan Patterson project and like the title of the song says sometimes reaching that standard is “Easier Said Than Done”. To consistently put out material of this caliber takes hard work, perseverance and talent. Honestly, Rahsaan proves time and time again that the key to his success is the dedication he has to all three attributes. That’s why his music sounds the way it does, period. Looking forward to the release.

Rahsaan Patterson – “Human Nature” (Live) & More

GFM fave Rahsaan Patterson recently performed a concert at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. If you don’t already know, the brotha is a serious talent and always puts on a great show. As always, you don’t have to take our word for it, hit the break for more clips from the show. (You never know who might be in the band, singing background or providing cameo’s). Crazy!

SugaRush Beat Company- L-O-V-E

As a student of great music I am always pleased when I’m granted a late pass. I wanted to give major props over on Twitter to @KaiulaniHill for putting the GFM Family on to this great music and granting that late pass. Right now I’m going to let the color commentary go and just let the music and the messengers speak for themselves. Yes Virginia, people still do make real music.

the LAH! and RAH! show 7

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

In this episode, Rahsaan Patterson talks about the first time he heard Lalah Hathaway on the radio singing “Heaven Knows”. The introspective conversation that ensues deals with the transformative power that great music can have and those flashpoint moments that we have when we are presented with great art for the first time.

BTW, if you don’t have Lalah Hathaway (or any titles from her discography) do your ears a favor and just click purchase…now. Enjoy!

the LAH! and RAH! show

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Funny and insightful were the first two adjectives that came to mind when I viewed the LAH! and RAH! show (did I mention funny?) the new webshow offering from artists and frequent collaborators Lalah Hathaway and Rahsaan Patterson. The show offers a unique perspective into the life of a touring and recording musician. Episodes frequently include an ensemble cast comprised of bandmembers.

This is truly artists doing it for themselves and when you have as much personality and talent as these two can you really blame them?
