Song of the Day: Luther Vandross: “Because It’s Really Love”

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

“I wanna be your friend, after the lovin’ ends. It’s not over then. You see it just begins. And all anyone could say is ooh wee you got it made. May the best of luck always come your way.”  Ahh Luther… if only it was that simple. His silky delivery of those lyrics and the rest of the song made you believe anything was possible if you really loved each other.  “Because It’s Really Love”, from the album Give Me The Reason.

Song of the Day: Luther Vandross – “Give Me The Reason”

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Our song today has that unmistakeable mid-80′s Luther production sound: lots of space, a driving bass, a drum track that teases in the verse and picks up in the chorus, FM synthesis keyboards, a guitar line that is the glue and those vocals, oh those vocals. From the Ruthless People Soundtrack.

Song of the Day: Luther Vandross “Stop To Love”

Monday, December 19th, 2011

From 1986′s Give Me The Reason this song was not only big at radio the video was probably spun just as often. Great advice in the lyrics here… yes there’s money and fame out on the road but sometimes it’s good to take some time and “Stop To Love”.

I Vow to be One with Thee

Another great editorial piece on our Artist of the Month comes to us today from one of our new contributing writers – Al-Lateef Farmer. Make sure to check him out at worldaccording2teef.com as well as you can follow him on Twitter here.

If you got married, were in a wedding or just invited to a wedding between the summer of 1989 and 1991, there is very little doubt that “Here & Now” by Luther Vandross wasn’t performed or played. “Here & Now” became the theme song for love; it is that song that seems to sum up everything you’ve always wanted to say to the person you love. Artist of the Month (Song of the Day)- “My Sensitivity”

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

“My Sensitivity” is one of those songs that is so catchy that you may just find yourself randomly humming it in the grocery store. “My Sensitivity” is another gem from “The Night I Fell in Love” album. This time Mr. Vandross gets covered as Ledisi and Boney James remade this song for volume 1 of the “Forever, For Always, For Luther” series.

“The Night I Fell in Love” is available at Amazon.com and the mp3 for “My Sensitivity” is also available.

Ledisi and Boney James’ version:

Artist of the Month (Song of the Day)- “Creepin’”

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

From 1985′s “The Night I Fell in Love”, “Creepin” was written by Stevie Wonder. As evidence of his genius, Stevie Wonder takes a concept that normally involves cheating and turns it into a positive concept in which you just can’t shake thoughts of that certain someone. As evidence of his genius, Luther Vandross adds an additional guitar and his signature vocal runs to the track.

Stevie Wonder’s Version:

You can purchase “The Night I Fell in Love” at Amazon.com. “Creepin’”is also available on “The Essential Luther Vandross”.

12 Play to Christmas: Luther Vandross – “Every Year, Every Christmas” [Video]

Friday, December 16th, 2011

There’s something beautiful in the blend of Luther’s voice and the sentimental longing of this song. The tune creates an imagery of a hopeful spirit waiting for love to return again. As in Luther’s vocals, they are unquestionable and rich with emotion that everyone can’t execute with such a masterful flair. From my personal standpoint,  I have such a soft spot for stories or songs of unrequited love. A person has to touch some very deep wells to perform such an emotion with great believability.  Between Luther’s force and the song’s passion, I feel similar to this hopeful lover longing for “this song” to return  “Every Year, Every Christmas.”!!! :)
