We wanted to send a special shout to all the members of Omega Psi Phi including our esteemed contributing writer “The Ricker” on this their 100th Founder’s Day.
We live in a very different world now than in 1911, but there is something to be said for striving to achieve excellence in one’s endeavors, concern for humanity, rigorous intellectual pursuit and tenacity. These virtues have no expiration date and I was fortunate to be raised by a man who’s life was the blueprint for this unfinished personhood that I am still working on. (more…)
“Love Like This” is a little gem from earlier in Ms. Hathaway’s career. Her silky vocals were the perfect compliment to Mr. Washington’s smooth saxophone in this beautiful quiet storm jam. Enjoy!
This is simply beyond beautiful… the connection between the performers, the composition, the story, the recording it’s all there. We’re fortunate that it has been captured for posterity. Reason 1 million and 1 that Lalah Hathaway is our Artist of the Month.
“Better and Better” is mo’ better. A soulful groove at just the right tempo with just right amount of bass. And of course… the smooth vocals of Ms. Hathaway. From her 2004 release, Outrun The Sky.
Life can sometimes reflect the movement of a ferris wheel. Sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down. If life’s carnival feels like a ride of animated characters, impossible feats and scary moments, it always helps to have someone or something to “lean on”. In our “song of the day”, Lalah Hathaway brings a melodic sip of soul that not only soothes the spirit but lifts you up when the chips are down. Here is “Lean On Me”.
Ms. Hathaway is known for her rich, soulful, ballads, but Lalah gives us New Jack Swing on this track. This is the one that you cranked up in the car once class was out. This is the ultimate “let your crush know that he’s your crush” song. “Let Me Love You” was from the cd release “Moment”, and the single reached # 37 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop songs. Here’s a bonus bounce remix for you:
The closing number from 1990′s Lalah Hathaway has our Artist of the Month displaying the funky side of her vocal repertoire. With vocal stacks reminiscent of another Chicago native: Chaka Khan, the track provides lots of space in the verse for the story to be laid out and builds up to a fiery multi-layered bridge. This tune is a great example of late 80′s/early 90′s electro funk.
