Patti Austin on “We Are The World 25″ for Haiti

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

The great Patti Austin was brought in to help school and regulate the ‘youngsters’ on the ‘We Are The World – Haiti’ remake. While I’m a little skeptical of some of the artists chosen and the potential outcome, I’ve gotta believe Lionel, Quincy and Patti will not put out anything less than a high quality product. Personal feelings aside, it’s for a great cause, so go out and support them anyway!

Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones will record a new version of We Are the World to benefit Haiti. The veteran stars are honouring the song’s 25th anniversary, releasing their tribute alongside new charity tracks by Simon Cowell, and Jay-Z and Bono – who have revealed that they are bringing along Rihanna.

Like the original 1985 recording, which raised money for famine relief in Africa, the new We Are the World will consist of both a song and a video. Organisers are asking artists to stay in Los Angeles for an extra night after the Grammy awards. According to Billboard, Richie and Jones hope to include Usher, Natalie Cole and John Legend, as well as many Grammy nominees.

The late Michael Jackson, one of the song’s co-authors, is also expected to be integrated into the project.

Haiti Relief Effort-Wyclef Jean

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

In response to the devastating earthquake that occurred in Haiti yesterday, musician/humanitarian Wyclef Jean has sent the clarion call for aid to his homeland. Wyclef has been working on a number of humanitarian efforts in Haiti for well-over a decade. In 2005 he established the Yele Haiti Foundation in response to Hurricane Jeanne.

This is how an artist with the social conscious of a Wyclef Jean responds to a crisis. As viral and immediate as we can make the most vile and totally unimportant information spread using social media, we can use these same tools for the greater good. Big ups to you Mr. Jean! It is a much more noble character to serve others than to be served.

Just text “Yele” to 501501 to make a $5 donation to Wyclef Jean’s relief effort via cellphone, and follow him on twitter @wyclef for more information!
