If satin had a sound, this would be it. Chrisette Michele AMAZES on this track. Lately the use of samples in music have signified laziness and a lack of creativity on the part of some of these artists, but this is definitely NOT the case here. The O’Jays’ “Stairway to Heaven” track was already certified smooth many years ago and Chrisette Michele breaks her vocals down, builds them back up and flips them over to it– seemingly with no effort. “A Couple of Forevers” is right up there with the excellence that Luther Vandross gave us when he covered a song. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
Our friends over at YouKnowIGotSoul caught up with Chrisette Michele and chatted with her about her “Audrey Hepburn” Mixtape, what to expect from her next album and her having ADHD musically. Check it out and enjoy.
Change is an inevitable thing in life and I’m glad to see Chrisette Michele embracing it so beautifully with her “avant-garde” look and upcoming project. Inspired by her travels overseas along with the muse of her favorite fashion icons, Michele has teamed up with celebrity photographer, Derek Blanks for the creation of her upcoming mixtape project, Audrey Hepburn: An Audiovisual Presentation, featuring a collage of docu-shorts and photography fused with the sounds of Hip Hop, R&B, Jazz and World Music. Personally, I’m really excited to see this project. Being an admirer of Michele’s voice and the visual arts, I can only imagine the audiovisual dimension this mixtape will incorporate. Audrey Hepburn: An Audiovisual Presentation will be available for free download December 8th.
In the meantime, check out the “behind the scenes” video for her mixtape single, CHARADES integrating her new style she playfully calls “Rich Hipster”.
The Robert Glasper Experiment Black Radio Tour stopped in the ATL to treat a sold-out crowd to its jazz, soul and hip-hop style all rolled into one evening. The crowd was already aware of Chrisette Michele’s scheduled presence at the show–she visually popped from the stage in a beautiful green dress as she broke down “Afro Blue”. To the delight and surprise of the crowd, Bilal also showed up to lend his vocals to “Letter To Hermione”. But the crowd really went crazy when Musiq Soulchild appeared on stage to perform “Ah Yeah” with Chrisette Michele.
In addition to the special guests, The Robert Glasper Experiment itself did the doggone thing on covers of “Say Yes” by Floetry and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, which, is a testament to that song. The original version is the furthest thing from jazz or soul music, so hearing Robert Glasper flip it over and cook it a different way means the song already had some meat on its bones. We were also treated to some J Dilla songs–with Bilal and Musiq rockin’ out “Reminisce” for an encore performance. There is much discussion today about the lack of musicianship from today’s artists and disappearance of good music; especially on the radio. But wait, hold up. It ain’t on yo’ radio. It’s on Robert Glasper’s Black Radio…go get it.
Now if there is a good concert coming to town, you will usually catch me somewhere in the vicinity. I guess you can call me your official concert traveler. Giving you the inside scoop to the shows that rock the ATL. So in keeping with this reputation, let me hip you to a concert you’re sure to mark your calendar for. On Sunday, March 4th Mr. Black Radio aka Robert Glasper will be hitting the stage of the Variety Playhouse with special guest, Chrisette Michele. Now a little birdie told me about a few surprise guests that would also be in the house but that information is completely top secret and I swore by my “Have Mercy Hot Wings” recipe I’d never tell . However, I can tell you this – you definitely will love it!!! So make sure you catch the show Sunday, March 4th at 8:30pm for this awesome Glasper Experiment!
