Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five – West End Blues

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

As part of our focus on Jazz this month on GFM, I want to take as many opportunities as I can to post seminal recordings and artists, with a bit of context. This recording by Louis Armstrong showcases his incredibly virtuosity as a musician.

In 1928 “West End Blues” was popular music and the reason that I emphasize that is because often when we listen to older recordings it is without the realization that they gave off the same feeling to someone else as we feel when we hear our favorite jam in our contemporary space. Louis Armstrong is the tributary from which all modern recording artists flow from and “West End Blues” was a major part of creating that phenomenon.

New Music: Columbia Nights – “Feel”

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

This great artwork is a representation of the word feel in braille.

Some great new heat coming from Columbia Nights with a cover of the title track from George Duke’s 1974 album Feel. This track is being released in anticipation of Columbia Nights EP that will be released this May. “Feel” is being offered as a free download so make sure you hit that down arrow on the player to add this to the playlist. GFM Fam should be familiar with Columbia Nights from their great cover of Little Dragon’s “Stormy Weather” and if you haven’t checked it out you should head over here.

Also, GFM Fam make sure you keep it right here for the GFM Spotlight Interview with Columbia Nights coming later this month.

Song of the Day: Funkadelic “One Nation Under A Groove”

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Why yes I do promise to funk! Man, wouldn’t it be something else if we could really get together under a groove, the groove a real groove like this? We need more of this spirit in music, like right now. Thank you AOM and P-Funk Mob for giving us another great composition that qualifies not only as a great song but an anthem.

Also they touched on where Mick Boogie found the Pharrell intro on his Pharrell tape, the process behind the Dilla tape, working with Nitty Scott, MC, his favorite project he’s done, his favorite artists to work with and his favorite tracks to play when he does live DJ sets. Charles Perry Covers “Home”

Monday, March 12th, 2012

You gotta love Charles Perry! I can’t recall anyone having as much fun as he does musically; his facial expressions, the way he bends his notes, teases with his range and the energy that goes into his performances, live and otherwise. And of course, the aliases: Soul Boy, the Soul Superhero and a list of others if you give him time to tell you.

An example of that fun is the recent YouTube clip he released of his cover of “Home”, originally performed by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. I know the word “who” popped into mind, but that’s exactly what makes Charles Perry so unique, his knack of making anything soulful and his! A simple Google search will find him putting his “stank” on various classics and a taste of what his live show is like.

For now, enjoy this rendition of “Home” and prepare for the Charles Perry takeover…
