Beautiful songbird Lianne La Havas never ceases to impress me. The new video for the song “Elusive” not only features Lianne displaying her acting chops but is presented in such a way; you can’t help being wrapped up in the love affair portrayed in this emotive song. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Be sure to have a listen and purchase Lianne’s album entitled Is Your Love Big Enough on iTunes, eMusic.com, Amazon.com, or any well stocked music store.

If you’re looking for a different type of Valentine’s Day treat here’s a French confection for your ears. I’ve been listening to Evil Needle’s Mood album since its release in October 2011 and it continues to put me in a great place. Jarrard Anthony – Ready To Live (Recommendation)

Friday, June 15th, 2012

The third outing from Richmond, VA based and internationally known artist Jarrad Anthony Ready To Live brings to mind all the melodic and lyrical vibrancy associated with the first wave singer-songwriter school, embodied by the likes of Taylor, Mitchell, Morrison et al.

Storytelling at its finest, Ready To Live presents characters with character and depth, all who share the common thread of forward motion no matter the obstacles that they may endure: which, even includes the space time continuum of “Never See Her Again”. Love may be at the center of it all here but make no mistake this set of music is not a “Moon, June, Spoon” ode to that emotion. No, Jarrad Anthony deals with the complexity of the emotion that more often than not is the catalyst for the creation of life both new and reborn. (more…)

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown – (Recommendation)

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

What do you get when you combine great musicianship, an affinity for the funk, lots o’ horns, guitars, heavy funky bass, tasty keys and an infectious multi-layered percussive groove fronted by a rotating cast of maestros and mistresses well-versed in funkdom (we can count George Clinton among that number no less!)? We get the labor of love embodied in the form of The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown Volume 1. due out May 22, 2012. The Getdown was created by John Heintz (Bass/Producer/Founder), John-Paul Miller (multi instrumentalist/producer), & Derrick Johnson (multi instrumentalist and features the aforementioned George Clinton, as well as members of several well know funk bands including members of P-Funk, Blackalicious, Graham Central Station, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dumpstaphunk, Galactic, Warren Haynes Band, Derek Trucks Band, The Lee Boys, Sun Ra Arkestra, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Kool and the Gang and Fishbone, to name a few. The band has a rotating line up of roughly 90 musicians from 50 touring bands. Yes I had to put an emphasis on the collective, the coming together, the oneness because often the beauty of this gift that we have been given called music.

The set clocks in just under an hour and begins in big fashion (with an almost beckoning call from the horn section) and unfolds more like a live experience than a recording. Standout tracks from the release for me are “The Beauty of Pretty”, “Room 2012″ and the single that has been giving the project some well deserved buzz “College Funk”. It is always a pleasurable experience for me when I have an opportunity to review projects that are so much more than “We made some cool new music, wanna buy it?” type projects. What is contained herein The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown Volume 1. is just as much a social and cultural movement as it is a musical one. A tip of the hat and kudos to all involved because the message is clear that the music here is the fuel for the movement.

From the press release

Born out of a love for an art form that paved the foundation for three decades of popular music, The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is a star-studded tribute to the history of American Funk and authentically touches on almost every style of music. The Getdown was created by John Heintz (Bass/Producer/Founder), John-Paul Miller (multi instrumentalist/producer), & Derrick Johnson (multi instrumentalist). Getdown saw its earliest incarnation more than four years ago at a New Orleans gathering that would soon go down in history. What began as an all-star meeting of the minds in the Crescent City quickly gave rise to a collective of musicians working tirelessly to remind the music industry of why funk was such an important part of the American cultural evolution.
Drawing from a reserve of more than one hundred musicians, The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown has created an avenue for some of the genre’s most influential figures to share the stage with its future stars. Showcasing recorded and live appearances from many of funk’s luminaries and legends – notably George Clinton, Norwood Fisher, Belita Woods, Sidney Barnes, Gift of Gab, Kendra Foster, Patryce “Choc’let” Banks as well as grammy winning artists Kofi Burbridge and Agent 23 Skidoo – The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is quickly generating an international reputation for producing some of the heaviest grooves heard in years. Duke Ellington “Music Is My Mistress”

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Throughout this month I will be recommending seminal autobiographies and biographies from artists from the Jazz world. While I was studying the music, I thought that it would be a very wise use of my time to learn more about the people who helped to create the music. One of the first assignments I gave myself was to read Duke Ellington’s autobiography Music Is My Mistress. The book reads in a very conversationally eloquent style that is fit for a Duke. My recommendation would be to get your hands on a copy and then take a listen to some of the Duke’s catalog (our songs of the day would be a great starting point).

Happy reading!

Najee – “The Smooth Side Of Soul” (Recommendation)

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

On The Smooth Side Of Soul we find Najee serving up a set that is distinctively soulful yet uniquely universal. The music contained herein does not reside in one zipcode but ranges from Uptown to Downtown to a South American Playa. Bright melodic, skillful playing is the order of the day here and Najee plays with a joy that you can’t help but caught up in.

Najee use of the different colors of the Alto, Tenor, Soprano and Flute give the listener almost the sense of moving to a few different sound stages, which provides the feeling of a journey, a tour if you will around a few different cities of soul. Covering the different horns with equal facility is not an easy task but Najee as he has done over the arc of his career moves from horn to horn with a deftness that showcases his fantastic musicianship.

With great tracks like “Sound For Sore Ears”, “You Tube”,”Perfect Nites”, “One Night In Soho” and “Just To Fall In Love” The Smooth Side Of Soul is primed to become a go to set for your listening experience at dinner, in the ride or the after dinner living room sit down. Some great guests appear on the recording in the personage of Phil Perry, Jeff Lorber, Pieces Of A Dream’s James Lloyd and Chris “Big Dog” Davis as well as Will Downing on the co-writing duties and backing vocals on “Just To Fall In Love”.

The recommendation here is: Pick up The Smooth Side Of Soul from Najee today and enjoy it tonight.

New Music: Curt Chambers: “Grass Is Greener”

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Curt Chambers brings a rock-meets-soul flavor on his first single “Grass is Greener”. There is some great guitar work on the track–thus the rock flavor, but his vocals are smooth enough to appeal to the R&B audience as well. Let the truth be told, “Grass Is Greener” actually sounds like a great crossover song that would do well… if it could get put on. He’s rockin’ the guitar backed with an uptempo beat and paired with solid lyrics. It reminds me some of the songs Bruno Mars put out like “Grenade” and “Just The Way You Are”– not in sound necessarily–but in feel. It just qualitatively feels like a good record that could be successful on the radio. Perhaps the unofficial test of the song’s radio friendliness is the fact that my six-year-old immediately picked up on the catchy hook (although he does repeat it several times; giving you a chance to catch it) and proceeded to sing it even after the song went off.

Curt Chambers is a Grammy-nominated songwriter for his contribution to the song “Finding My Way Back” by Jaheim. He has also worked with Eminem and as music director for Eric Roberson. He was the lead singer/guitarist for the Philadelphia-based group Franklin Bridge. Franklin Bridge was a top-ten finalist on Simon Fuller’s Fox TV show The Next Great American Band.

The Original 7ven(The Band Formerly Known As The Time) – Condensate(Recommendation)

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

This is one of those recommendations where in a way I had reviewed the album in my mind before I actually had the album. After vibing to the first single #Trendin a few weeks ago someone on the GFM team hipped me to the snippets of Condensate that had made their way to Amazon. I distinctly remember having two thoughts upon hearing the teaser: 1. This project is great for music and 2. Notice has been served: Musicians are at work here. (more…)
