Lydia is a classically trained pianist and accomplished musician, Lydia René’s sound is best described as smooth out-of-the box soul. Puckered with sonic surprises, it is infused with jazz riffs and alternative stylings that help take the listener to a higher musical plateau than that of the norm. Lydia René’s eclectic influences and free spirited musicianship culminated in her first release My Love IS My Life, recorded live. GFM recently chatted with South African singing sensation LIRA. LIRA is currently preparing for her first full length US debut Feel Good which is slated to be released this year.
GFM: The musical heading Afro-Soul is incredibly intriguing, could you tell us more about the concept and how you arrived at it as the label for your music?
LIRA: My music is influenced by American Soul music like Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin. However it is also influenced by some jazz and latin based grooves and the Afro element is in the use of African languages. This results in sultry, celebratory, inspirational and music which is good the soul. (more…)
December 22, 2011 (New York, NY) – Today, N.A.R.S. Records / Mercury Records / Island Def Jam recording artist Luke James releases his pre-album, #LUKE for FREE exclusively on DatPiff.com. The highly anticipated debut solo work from one of today’s most talked about artists who has yet to release an album is sure not to disappoint fans and critics alike. Today’s FREE pre-album release of#LUKE will be followed by the full-length release of Luke James’ debut solo album, Made to Love, in 2012.
Packed with interesting breaks and tempo shifts, lead single, “I Want You,” beautifully showcases Luke James’ pure, arresting falsetto. But it is tracks like the haunting “Signs of Rain,” dance influenced “Powerless,” and vocally-layered “Made To Love” on #LUKE that truly illustrate hisdiversity and mastery of the R&B genre. #LUKE pulsates with infectious, hip-hop-influenced beats that perfectly complement Luke James’ outstanding R&B-grounded vocals, and it is this foundation in technique, creativity and God-given talent that is poised to situate this rising star as the one to watch on the R&B /Pop scene.
Having already charmed critics from coast to coast, like being named Hip Hollywood’s October 2011 “Artist of the Month,” one of AOL’s The Boombox’s “Top 15 Artists to Watch” and being asked to headline Give Back Hollywood / VH1 Save The Music Foundation’s Pre MTV VMA benefit, Luke James will wrap his multi-city opening gig on Robin Thicke’s “Love After War” tour in Philadelphia on December 29, 2011. Ok so of course I have to start this post with one small caveat and that is that my love for the sound of Elle Varner has been documented on these very pages. If you want to check out that particular love fest go here.
Now granted I don’t know if “Refill” is an official single release or if it is just something that Elle’s team is testing the waters of the interwebs with… I know it arrived in the inbox last evening and of course it got the immediate open and push play because of the aforementioned love fest. Again, I must confess that I realize that I am probably not the target demo for Elle. I must say though, that I did feel somewhat hip when back in August I was rebuffed by my teenager daughter when I tried to put her on to “Only Wanna Give It To You” only to be ignored and then lo and behold who happens to playing the song about three months later when I walked by the room but I digress… (more…)
