Really, really diggin’ Latasha Lee & The Blackties. Ms. Lee has that throwback, soulful vocal tone that artists such as Adele and Amy Winehouse have brought back to the airwaves in recent years. Lee sites the late, great Etta James as one of her musical role models and you can hear the influence, still there is youthfulness in her voice that will allow her to connect to today’s radio audience with the right material. But, if Ms. Lee never goes the “radio friendly” route, then that’s alright because the style she’s working with fits her (and us) just fine. Looking forward to more from this artist. Check out her cover of Johnny Ace’s “Pledging My Love” below.
Water Seed takes us on a journey with their second installment from Wonder Love Part 1, Hues of Blue. A homage to the complications of falling in love and losing. The never ending conflict of following your head or your heart.
Pianist, songwriter and vocalist Abiah has been under the radar far too long. Abiah has received raving reviews for his album Love As a Ballad from music enthusiasts much like yourselves. Robert Glasper is a relative of Abiah and is featured on several tracks of the album. So in keeping with the mood of the season, I’d be remised if I didn’t in the very least, shine a spot light on this man’s body of work. The arrangements are so well put together, thoughtful, and in the case of Abiah’s remake of Prince’s “Doves” downright inventive! Check out his entire album as it will be a pleasure to sit back and really enjoy.

If you’re looking for a different type of Valentine’s Day treat here’s a French confection for your ears. I’ve been listening to Evil Needle’s Mood album since its release in October 2011 and it continues to put me in a great place. The warm synth chords and sleepy base lines help Evil Needle’s Mood album create an atmosphere for relaxation and romance. Happy Valentine’s Day it’s a Celebration. #FortheLoVeofAllMusic

Aiight folks, you know I’m always trying to find music of the time, you know like now: 2013. This was just released a few weeks ago and its on my radar for a sound of the time. The track is also available for you to download here. Let me know in the comments section about your thoughts not only about the song but its timeliness. You know all we have is now…
Check out “Make Love To Me” from GFM fave Luke James. The bassline, keyboard chords and finger snaps–hugely reminiscent of Al B. Sure’s “Ooh This Love is So”– drive the melody of the song and make it instantly likable; at least for me anyway. Luke James’ vocal delivery is strong, but not forced. And even though the title of the song is straightforward and the lyrics are suggestive, this song is not vulgar. It rests comfortably at “sexy”. Just as “Grown Folks Music” should. But, the icing on the cake is that the video puts Ernie Barnes’ “Sugar Shack” painting (the painting featured on the ’70s TV show Good Times into motion and it’s wonderful to watch.
Luke James recently took time out of his increasingly busy schedule to speak with Grown Folks Music about his transition from being a member of a duo to becoming a solo artist. He also gave us insight on what to expect from his upcoming full-length releases, and he advised us as to who his favorite artists are (past and current artists).
GFM listeners will get a treat as Luke gave us to some acapella Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight. Listen in to learn more about this amazing new talent and the times that he served as a “ghost singer” in high school.
For more on Luke, check out his website whoislukejames.com or his Facebook page. You can also follow Luke on Twitter. You can still download his free EP #Luke. The single “I Want You” is also available as a single download at Amazon.com.
