It’s long overdue, but NY is finally launching the first Annual NYC Reggae Festival conceived by NY’s MANKIND UNITED on Saturday, August 4th in the downtown E.Village at DROM.
The Reggae Fest features many wicked Reggae Artists plus a very rare performance from the Original Queen of Dancehall- Sister Nancy. Sister Nancy’s career spans over 2 decades. Her most famous song “Bam Bam” is labeled as a well-known Reggae Album and a classic. She explained her absence in the recording scene over the last years as she wanted to give other female artists a chance.
Also on the bill is ILLSPREE who brings hardcore roots and vibes with 100% originality.
Ras T straight from JAMAICA with Fearless Lyrics, Vibes and Riddims.
Music provided by one of the heaviest sound systems out of Brooklyn called The Majestic Twinsound.
The Festival happens to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence (Aug 6th) and this may be one of the only concerts recognizing this important piece of history in NY- however, around the Globe, the world will be celebrating and honoring 50 years of Jamaica’s Independence - Come celebrate at DROM.

Grown Folks Music had the opportunity to attend a listening party hosted by Moods Music for artist and producer Mark de Clive Lowe. The event was hosted by Atlanta’s own DJ Kemit. If this is your first time hearing of Mark, he is originally from New Zealand. Mark credits his father with nurturing his love of music. Interestingly, one of his first and biggest musical influences was hearing Guy’s debut album in 1989 or 1990. Mark is known for his remixes such as his take on Shirley Horn’s “Return to Paradise”.
When asked about the current music industry, Mark believes that some of the new music lacks substance because a lot of the new music does not honor the past. Mark also notes the importance of not being motivated by money when an artist is making music. Mark currently resides in Los Angeles.
His latest release Renegades is available at Amazon.com.
If you missed the “complete” interview from this event, feel free to enjoy the following videos. Much love to the Music Addikts, Harmony in Life, Moods Music and Queam Liquor for hosting the party.(more…)

As a music blogger, I get the opportunity to see a number of shows. Some of them are great and others make you question is it really a “live show” if an artist lip syncs to an autotuned vocal? Like seriously…should I be applauding this because I didn’t get the memo?!?!? But regardless of the debatable things I’ve witnessed, there are others that totally create a moment. For instance, I can think back to I my freshman year in high school, listening to the radio on my Panasonic boom box – yes….I did say my Panasonic boom box . After the DJ said something I can barely remember, I recall hearing these dramatic chords began by a 6 piece band with one lead singer subtlety whispering, “Pretty…..brown…….eyes”. The moment I heard Breaking My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) , I knew Mint Condition not only played a chord in my ear but they left an imprint in my love for music. Not that it wasn’t enough that this band was under the direction of my favorite music producers, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, but I hadn’t heard a sound like that since precociously rummaging in my mother’s old funk band albums. “My Drawers” is as funky as “drawers” can get. Certified funk. Dope guitars, drums goin’ hard and silky vocals. If you don’t groove to this, then maybe your drawers are in bunch. Remove the wedgie and dance!
