The Rolling Stones-Waiting On A Friend

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

A perfect lazy Sunday afternoon groove. One of my favorite parts of this song has always been listening Sonny Rollins blow over this Caribbean influenced track.

BTW, through the joys of You Tube/Major Labels etc., you cannot embed the original video, so thanks to these nice folks who put this video together, that has not gotten snatched down…yet.

Rush Inducted into the Hall of Fame

Monday, March 29th, 2010

B-I-G congratulations to iconic Canadian Rock Band Rush has been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Forty years of excellent musicianship, songwriting and still going strong, this is a well deserved accomplishment. Will your favorite artist be able to say that??

Sixteen songs including: Tom Sawyer, Limelight, The Spirit Of Radio and Closer To The Heart were all inducted. Up next… The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? There has been a long standing debate as to why they’ve been snubbed for so long. While I was extremely happy to see Run DMC get their props, it’s beyond time for Rush as well!

Much has been made of the highly anticipated release of the entire Beatles catalogue (re-mastered for the first time) in conjunction with the release of of “The Beatles: Rock Band” video game. For gamers and music fans, this is an exciting day. Check the press release below:

“I Saw Her Standing There”

THE BEATLES’ ENTIRE ORIGINAL RECORDED CATALOGUE REMASTERED BY APPLE CORPS LTD. AND EMI MUSIC
FOR WORLDWIDE RELEASE ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2009 (9-9-09)

Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music are delighted to announce the release of the original Beatles catalogue, which has been digitally re-mastered for the first time, for worldwide CD release on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 (9-9-09), the same date as the release of the widely anticipated “The Beatles: Rock Band” video game. Each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. For a limited period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album. On the same date, two new Beatles boxed CD collections will also be released.

The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.

Rush – Red Barchetta/Tom Sawyer

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

One of my favorite groups of all time: bassist/keyboardist/lead vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and writter/drummer supreme, Neil Peart, collectively known as Rush.

30+ years going strong. 24 Gold Records, 14 platinum albums and fourth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold or platinum albums by a rock band (Wikipedia), yet somehow still underrated.

R.I.P. Mitch Mitchell, drummer, the Jimi Hendrix Experience

Mitch Mitchell (1947-2008)

From Jonathan Cohen, Billboard.com
Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell was found dead early this morning (Nov. 12) in a Portland, Ore., hotel room, according to representatives for the Hendrix estate. He was 62.

After completing the Experience Hendrix tour in Portland with one-time bandmate Billy Cox and a host of notable musicians on Nov. 7, Mitchell was spending some down time in the city before returning to his native England. He likely died of natural causes, according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s office.

“We’re all devastated to hear of Mitch’s passing,” says Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix. “He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated.”
